September 1989—October 2008

Sherman came to us in January of 1990, just a few weeks after Cynthia moved to North Carolina from California, so he's been with us for as long as we've been together.

He was perfect, and perfect for us.

Shermie endured for nearly two decades: moving from apartments to rental houses to Woodland Drive; sharing space with our dog Greta; the encroachment of younger, tougher and bigger cats on his territory; taking the occasional Rimadyl by mistake; even diabetes (twice), locked basements and dive-bombing birds.

He was a cat: a sweet boy with us, and a cold-blooded killer in his little Woodland jungle. He was devoted, loving, talkative, fussy and snuggable. He loved the warm spot on the bed in the spring, and crawling under the covers during winter nights.

You all know how much we loved him, so you know how much we miss him now.

It's so hard to say goodbye to those pets who help us define our lives.
I'm sorry you had to say goodbye to Sherman.

What a wonderful tribute to Sherman! I can't imagine how difficult it is to lose such a treasured family member. May all of the wonderful memories you've shared together help you through this tough time.

FRAGILE CIRCLE,
a poem by Irving Townsend:

We who choose to surround ourselves with lives even more temporary than our own live within a fragile circle, easily and often breached. Unable to accept it's awful gaps, we still would live no other way. We cherish memory as the only certain immortality, never fully understanding the necessary plan.

Sherman was such a cool and tough cat. We really did believe he had nine lives. It hurts so much to lose such a friend. We are thinking of you.
